Management Accountant – Permanent Contract

The purpose of the Management Accountant is to provide commercial analysis and key decision-making information to the organisation.  Support enhancement of processes and systems.


Key Responsibilities

(Key responsibilities include, but may not be limited to):

Ø Assume responsibility for the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of decision-making financial information within IMI

Ø Support and work with the CFO in the achievement of company and departmental goals

Ø Act as a business partner to all IMI teams and supply the senior management team with information as required

Ø Maintain supportive relationships with colleagues and with internal and external stakeholders

Ø Demonstrate good communication and negotiation skills to guide, influence and convince colleagues and external parties within own remit


Main Tasks

Ø Develop, compile and maintain regular revenue forecasts

Ø Provide profit & loss forecasting for Senior management and Board

Ø Develop operational budgeting and performance reporting

Ø Play a significant role in the implementation of an accounting systems replacement

Ø Update, analyse and circulate weekly Key Performance Indicators

Ø Guide commercial team with project pricing and decision support

Ø Co-ordinate financial elements of annual business plan

Ø Support finance team members with interpretation and analysis and help to enhance team skills. 


Candidate Requirements

Ø Skills & Experience Required

Ø 3 years minimum experience in an accounting role in industry

Ø Accounting qualification preferred but candidates with a good academic record will be considered

Ø Excellent Microsoft Excel skills (ideally to advanced level)

Ø Working knowledge and excellent understanding of accounting systems

Ø Commercial awareness of management accounting issues including price, margin, volume relationships

Ø Verbal and written communication skills to interpret accounting measures for others

Ø Experience of guiding others in managing and interpreting information

Ø Effective team work and flexibility is required

Ø Ability to operate on own initiative and to multi task, with little day-to-day supervision

Ø Report writing experience in a finance package or SQL would be an advantage

Main Tasks (extended details from previous page)

Forecasting and Budgeting

1.            Measure and monitor the income recognition patterns of business already won.

2.            Measure and assess future revenues from current and projected leads.

3.            Compile varied revenue streams into a unified revenue forecast for each business unit.

4.            Forecast future costs using known fixed costs and patterns of variable costs.

5.            Complete a full P&L forecast on a regular (quarterly) basis.

6.            Analyse changes in forecast and obtain explanations for variances.

7.            Liaise with Commercial team to develop annual business plan revenues.

8.            Evaluate logic for business plan forecast and conduct sensitivity analysis

9.            Ensure consistency between written business plan and financial projections.

10.          Investigate integration of budget model with finance systems (both ways).

Operational Performance measures

1.            Review process for budgeting for individual programmes

2.            Assess opportunities and costs of incorporating revised budget in accounting system or CRM.

3.            Develop programme margin reporting.

4.            Facilitate access to and distribution of programme margin outcomes to programme managers.

5.            Develop infrastructure for programme outcome reporting.

6.            Provide regular budget and actual cost reports to budget holders as agreed. 

7.            Produce ad hoc budget and actual performance reports as required.

Accounting Systems Project

1.            Develop plan and implementation schedule, making allowance for historical data capture, parallel running, roll back and disaster recovery.

2.            Implement approved system in conjunction with suppliers, Finance team and other IMI stakeholders.

3.            Report on outcomes against targets, lessons learned, recommendations for future projects.

4.            Report on further adaptations and amendments required.

Key Performance Indicators

1.            Maintain existing weekly KPIs and produce according to agreed schedule

2.            Ensure reliability and validity of sources of data providing KPI information

3.            Develop, implement and refine weekly and monthly KPIs for Commercial and Delivery divisions according to Master KPI requirements list

4.            Develop, implement and refine weekly and monthly KPIs for subunits of Commercial and Delivery divisions according to Master KPI requirements list

5.            Provide interpretations of KPIs for managers as required

6.            Provide recommendations for enhancements to KPIs to improve effectiveness

7.            Generate documentation around preparation of weekly KPIs to ensure continuity of expertise

8.            Train alternative in producing KPIs to ensure continuity in times of absence.

Commercial Decision Support

1.            Provide pricing support to Commercial division in the following form:

•              Pricing and margin models for Tailored and Strategic Partnership programmes

•              Price resilience and budget adherence for Graduate and Open programmes

•              Advice on margin outcome of pricing decisions

•              Price monitoring and advice as requested

2.            Develop effective forecasting systems for decision making and reporting purposes

3.            Provide analysis and interpretation of management accounts to Commercial division

Finance Team Support

1.            Provide support and cover for other finance team members

2.            Provide advice and recommendations for improving Finance and company processes

3.            Provide support during annual audit.

4.            Undertake such other responsibilities as directed by the Chief Financial Officer
